An all new Kindle Wi-Fi eReader model was released last week, and it carries with it a new design, and a new lower price tag starting at only $79. When the Kindle 3 Wi-Fi eReader was first released it carried a retail price tag of $139. While this was very competitive when compared to the competition, Amazon has never been a company that is happy with being just as good as the next guy. Consequently, several months after its release, Amazon lowered the price of the Kindle 3 Wi-Fi eReader to $114 for consumers who wouldn’t mind receiving special money-saving offers and advertisements on their home page and screen savers.
Immediately after dropping the retail price to $114 for their Special Offers Kindle 3, it became the best selling product on all of Amazon, and not just in the electronics marketplace. This week, as a part of a threefold announcement, Amazon has released a new version of the Kindle Wi-Fi eReader and priced it at a low $79. The Kindle 3 keyboard has been replaced with a 5 way controller and a much more compact design. For those consumers shopping for a Kindle Wifi, you can receive the al new Kindle 3 Wi-Fi eReader without any special offers for $109. The second and third parts of the recent threefold announcement by Amazon concerned the release of their first Tablet PC, the Kindle Fire at $199, and their first touch screen eReader, the Kindle Touch at $99.
Like many consumer-electronics firms, Kindle understands the need to lower the retail price of their current products when new technology is released. Also, sales pressure from Kobo and Barnes and Noble in the touch screen eReader marketplace probably had something to do with the substantial retail price lowering, and touch screen enabled Kindle announcements.
Last week Amazon announced their library lending program which was rolled out to 11,000 library locations throughout the US. This enables the Kindle eReader owner to rent or check out library books in a digital format from the comfort of their own home without ever having to visit their local library. Users will receive a notification 3 days before the book is due, and the digital copy simply expires, meaning consumers don’t have to worry about late fees or lost library books. The $79 Kindle with special offers and the $109 Kindle Wi-Fi eReader is compatible with the library lending Amazon program.
With the presell release of their 7 inch Kindle Fire tablet PC and the announcement of the presell on their $99 touchscreen eReader, Amazon is positioning themselves for a very profitable holiday shopping season. Initial sales figures are not available for the $79 Kindle, but the Kindle Fire 7 inch tablet sold 95,000 copies on the first presell launch date.
