When Nokia too the centerstage at the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona, the company made a big splash when it announced the Nokia 808 PureView, a Symbian Belle-running handset with a 41-megapixel (no, it’s not a typo) rear shooter. With the handset, the Finnish smartphone manufacturer has broke new grounds in high-end smatphone imaging and this mid-boggling, almost unbelievable megapixel count on the Nokia 808 PureView got it the nod of the panel of journalists and analysts at the Annual Global Mobile Awards who unanimously voted to give the Best New Device award to the handset.

The Nokia 808 PureView makes use of high-performance Carl Zeiss optics working together with new pixel oversampling technology to give the handset its large, high-resolution 41-megapixel sensor. According to Nokia, using the shooter of the handset at standard resolutions enables a user to zoom without loss of clarity for stills with exceptional image quality. Not only that, the rear shooter of the Nokia 808 PureView also boasts of superior low-light performance unlike what we’ve seen in the past making the handset ideal for capturing images even in dimly-lit situations without compromising image quality. Not only that, the rear shooter of the Nokia 808 PureView is capable of full HD 1080p video recording and makes use of Nokia’s proprietary Rich Recording technology which enables audio recording at CD-like levels of sound quality.

In addition to that, we also have the more pertinent details about the specs sheet of the Nokia 808 PureView coming right up to give you an idea of what the handset has to offer other than its unbelievable 41-megapixel rear shooter.

During the announcement of the Nokia 808 PureView at Mobile World Congress, there was no confirmation as to when the handset will get to hit the shelves but there are rumors that suggest that the device will make its debut in the shelves this May. The handset is a bit bulky and hefty at its dimensions of 123.9 x 60.2 x 13.9 mm and it weighs in at 169 grams.

The details about the internals of the Nokia 808 PureView are not as complete as we would want them to be but it was confirmed that the handset will pack an ARM11 processor running at a clock speed of 1.3 GHz. The processor will get support from 512 MB of Ram in powering its Symbian Belle operating system while its storage space is pegged at 16GB. Additionally, the internal memory of the handset can be beefed up by making use of the Nokia 808 PureView’s dedicated microSD card slot that can support external media cards of up to 32GB. In terms of its display, the handset packs a 4.0-inch AMOLED display with a 640 x 360 resolution. Aside from being made from Gorilla Glass, the display of the Nokia 808 PureView is powered by Nokia’s ClearBlack Display technology. A front-facing VGA shooter joins the 41MP rear shooter of the handset in its camera department.

Given this kind of impressive specs sheet only made more impressive by its mind-boggling 41MP rear shooter, the Nokia 808 PureView definitely deserves the Best New Device award at the ongoing Mobile World Congress.
