Nokia has finally begun initiating its plan of action in the US. The Finnish company has a chance of ousting BlackBerry from the 3rd position of leading smartphone operating systems. The spotlight is now on Nokia as it rolls out its much anticipated flagship device, the Lumia 900. AT&T has been chosen as the official carrier for the device. The phone will be available at stores beginning April 8th priced at a mere $100, which is a great bargain considering that the phone includes features like LTE, a 4.3 inch AMOLED display and an 8 MP shooter embedded with a Carl Zeiss lens.

Until now, Windows has been able to steal little market share from iOS and Android. Critics believe that pricing is the key aspect where Nokia seems to making headway and cited the increased sale of the Nokia Lumia 710 as an example. The Lumia 900 on the other hand could lead to a make or break situation for the Windows Phone platform in the US. The success of the Lumia 900 is expected to help the Windows platform inch a step closer to the other operating systems.

Hughes de la Vergne, an analyst at Gartner noted that there was always room for a third platform. He also speculated that Windows Phone is capable of occupying that spot after RIM’s popularity dropped last year. One thing that the Lumia 800 lacked was carrier subsidy. The Lumia 900 on the other hand seems to have tackled this issue thanks to its wholesale price and added subsidy from AT&T, which has led to an observable drop in the retail price. LTE support is always known to generate career interest, but combining the low price and LTE support takes this phone to a whole new level. Rumours point to Nokia paying a sum of $25 million to AT&T aimed at promoting the Windows Phone platform and reducing the ignorance that currently surrounds the OS.

Although the Lumia 900 possesses great specs, smartphones today are incomplete without a wide variety of apps. Both Nokia and Microsoft have agreed to pay 9 million Euros for initiating a new programme that promotes app development. The program named AppCampus is based in Aalto University and will see development of apps for three platforms- Windows Phone, Symbian and Nokia’s feature phone Series 40.

If all works well for Windows, these moves could lay the foundation for the much anticipated Windows 8 platform, which is expected to be released later this year.  You can pre-order the Nokia Lumia 900 at select AT&T authorized retailers starting at just one penny!

  1. I can’t wait until the Lumia 900 is released over here in the UK. It’s ever so pretty! I’ve used my friend’s Lumia 800 before, and it’s made me fall completely in love with Windows phones. I guess they aren’t customizable as much as the Androids… but they’re the nicest looking of the three main operating systems in my opinion.

Could really do with a front camera though, which is one of the reasons I’m thinking about waiting to get the 900 rather than buying the 800 now. It’s not available over here until early may I hear. Lucky US for getting it in just a few days time. Guess I could always get one shipped over lol.
