CEO of Oracle Larry Ellison has stated that his company is capable of designing the world’s “most comprehensive” cloud service in the world. He made this statement during a live webcast on Wednesday. The Oracle cloud is known to constitute a suite of applications which can be served as both PaaS (platform as a service) and SaaS (Software as a service), which is also inclusive of Java Cloud and Database Cloud services. The cloud service also plays host to the company’s social network, which provides Facebook-like tools for different enterprises.
Most details stated during the webcast were inaccurate. The Oracle cloud was announced at the OpenWorld conference in October last year. The company has already included specifics and pricing details pertaining to the public cloud on their website. Applications are expected to use a per-user, per-month pricing scheme, but despite Ellison’s statements it was unclear as to when most of these components will be available.
Ellison’s recent statements were in sharp contrast to his previous ones, where he sharply criticizes cloud technology as a whole, going to the extent of calling it “hype filled gibberish”. Such views were clearly absent during the webcast on Wednesday as Ellison mapped out a strategy for its cloud technology. Oracle claims that it’ll offer around 100 different cloud applications which will span over segments like ERP, CRM, HCM and many others.
Wednesday’s webcast allowed Ellison to demonstrate the many advantages that Oracle’s Cloud has over its competitors from SAP and salesforce.com. The webcast also provided a platform for Ellison’s traditional competitive trash talk. In Ellison’s perspective, the most important advantage that Oracle cloud possesses over its competitors is that of security. He stated that company has spent several years in researching better security systems for its customers. He further added that fine grading of customer security has contributed towards the increase in security.
He also stated that security of customer data has always been Oracle’s first priority. Oracle has achieved this level of security by ensuring that a given customer’s database is not intermingled with data from other customers. This according to Ellison is the major advantage that Oracle customers will enjoy. Customers will also be offered their own virtual machine thus contributing to security. Virtual technology is one other way to ensure added security according to employees at Oracle.
