It is hard to argue against that mobile handset delivering the most capable and powerful camera experience of any phone. Nokia has openly expressed a desire to be known as the biggest and best mobile imaging company, and just this week took another step in that direction. Nokia has announced that the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520 smartphones will be receiving RAW image file support in November.

The over the air update will automatically be sent to your Lumia 1020 4G smartphone, and while the average mobile shutterbugs will probably not notice any improvements, this technology delivers a much more “totally natural” image according to Nokia. JPEG image processing usually cleans up noise and other imaging flaws which exist in a natural snapshot, but the RAW image processing technology is appropriately named, because it simply and perfectly captures the image as you see it, in its rawest form.

This opens up a huge window of opportunity for those creative mobile photographers that really want to use their Lumia 1020 to its fullest potential. The 4G phone has a rear facing camera which leads the mobile handset marketplace in megapixels, a Carl Zeiss optics package is on board, and both LED and a more powerful Xenon flash are present. The 41 megapixel PureView snapper also delivers optical image stabilization, either auto or manual focus exposure compensation and ISO control features.

A self timer has been included see you can add yourself to the action, a video light is present, as is 4x lossless digital zoom. The handset also offers a front facing chat cam which is capable of 720P HD resolution video recording at the rate of 30 frames per second. Nokia also announced the delivery of a unique “refocus” feature for the Lumia 1020 and the rest of its PureView devices. This new feature allows you to shift the focus of your photograph, after it has been taken.

You must access the Nokia Refocus website to do so, but this is simply one more in-depth editing feature that many serious photographers will love about the Nokia Lumia 1020. The company has announced November for a rollout to Lumia 1020 smartphones, so if you own one of the powerful 4G handsets in North America, begin looking for a notification in the coming weeks. The phone also delivers more than capable run time, with 19.1 hours delivered from a single charge, a large 4.5 inch HD+ AMOLED display, 2.0 GB of RAM system memory and 32 GB of built-in data storage space.
