Samsung is one company that can compete with Google and being in the same Android space does not help Google in that fight. Apple has it easier since Google is not going to create any device that is powered by the iOS operating system. Samsung on the other hand, develops most of its smartphones and tablets with Android in mind and now it looks like the company could be getting ready to develop its own Google Glass clone. According to publications in Korea, the company is looking to bring a pair of smartglasses to the market soon and they could debut at the IFA 2014 in September.
The new glasses are said to be called Galaxy Glass and they could work very similarly to the way that the Galaxy Gear smartwatch works by allowing users to view their notifications, take pictures with the built-in camera, make phone calls and listen to their favorite music right from their glasses. The one downside to the Galaxy Gear was that when it launched, it was only compatible with a few devices, which has since grown, but many would hope that the same is not true for the Galaxy Glass.
If this is the case with Galaxy Glass, the Google Glass will be the better option out of the box. Last year’s IFA event is where Samsung brought the Galaxy Gear smartwatch to the market and there are plenty that are expecting that Samsung will do the same this year, but with the new glasses. Google has yet to offer the Google Glass to the public and with that being said, it could be important the company does so before Samsung does. Google Glass is available at a cost for those that want to develop for them, but are not available for the typically consumer yet.
Google and Samsung just announced a partnership to use each other’s patents over the next decade, so this rumor fits into the news cycle in an awkward way. With the device expected to show up at the IFA event in September, the rumors are going to have to wait to be confirmed as Samsung is typically very quiet about new devices that it brings to the market right up until they are ready to launch.
