Launched on February 7 of this year in the US on the AT&T 4G LTE network, the Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone/mini tablet has been a rousing success for both Samsung and AT&T. Originally predicted by many analysts to be too large, it turns out consumers like the larger screen size than any other smartphone, while still delivering a design that is easier to hold and operate than a 7 inch tablet. And at 5.3 inches, the multi-capacitive touchscreen delivers a unique smart stylus S Pen technology that recognizes your handwriting.

The Samsung Galaxy Note Android phablet (phone/tablet) measures 5.78 x 3.27 x 0.38 inches (147 x 83 x 10 mm) in size, and weighs 6.28 ounces (178 g), delivering a large high resolution display and a device size which can still be held in one hand and manipulated with your other. Corning’s Gorilla Glass provides a layer of display protection, and the Samsung TouchWiz UI Android overlay meshes with Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) 4.0. That display is rendered in more than 16 million different colors, and has a resolution of 800 x 1,280 pixels. Pixel density runs to the high-end of the smartphone marketplace, at 285 pixels per inch. The built-in light sensor automatically adjusts for the best possible brightness taking into account any ambient light present, and the built-in proximity sensor helps conserve battery life.

The oversized and extended life 2,500 mA battery on board delivers up to 25% better talk time than the average 4G smartphone, at 10.00 hours. In the hardware package on board the Samsung Galaxy Note 4G LTE, a Qualcomm MSM8660 Snapdragon microchip set is built around a dual core 1.5 GHz Scorpion central processor. A separate Adreno 220 GPU handles all graphics processing, 16 GB of storage are built-in, and the handset delivers 1.0 GB of RAM system memory. A microSD slot is on board for storage expansion, supporting cards up to 32 GB in size.

Facing the Galaxy Note user is a 2.0 megapixel chat cam which can also be used for portrait snapshot capturing, as well as video calls. Around back is an 8.0 megapixel camcorder with built-in LED flash that offers smile detection, a multishot mode, panorama mode, preloaded scenes and autofocus features. That rear facing snapper records video in 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (1,080p HD) and at 30 frames per second. The Galaxy Note delivers Near Field Communications (NFC) support out-of-the-box, as well as Facebook, YouTube, Picasa and Twitter applications.
