The Samsung Galaxy Note 4G Android smartphone/tablet made a big splash in the smartphone marketplace when it appeared for the first time in February of this year with the largest display offered by any 4G handset. Aside from boasting a large, high-resolution screen, the handset also delivers tablet-like functionality as well as 4G LTE speed and connectivity.

Designed with an integrated S Pen smart stylus that recognizes your handwriting, the Samsung Galaxy Note delivers a host of writing, note-taking and art-creating options. And for Android smartphone shoppers looking for an Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system (due by June 30), large high-resolution screen, and full-featured package, the Samsung Galaxy Note just became more attractive.

Exclusive to the AT&T 4G LTE network in the US, that handset was recently dropped to a retail price of $199 on activation at select retailers. And two bits of recent news seem to foretell a bright future for devices like the Galaxy Note, which offers a 5.3 inch display. Online industry analysts ABI Research recently announced that their extensive data shows that powerful smartphones with a larger display of 5.1 to 5.5 inches, currently called phablets, will sell more than 208 million units annually as early as 2015. Boosting that prodigious claim is the recent release by Samsung confirming sales of more than 10 million units globally of the Galaxy Note device.

With the new lower retail price tag, the Galaxy Note device is no doubt stealing sales from tablets like the Amazon Kindle Fire. That tablet was the first to popularize a smaller 7 inch screen, but delivers no smartphone capabilities. The 5.3 inch Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy Note phablet delivers a high resolution 285 pixels per inch for an overall screen resolution of 800 x 1,280 pixels, and takes tablet portability to the extreme, small enough in size to fit into a pocket. Visuals are rendered in more than 16 million colors, and light and proximity sensors enhance battery productivity.

Talk time from a single charge of the 2,500 mA battery runs 10 hours, approximately 25% better than offered by the average 4G handset. Powering the Galaxy Note 4G is a Qualcomm MSM8660 Snapdragon chip set that includes a dual core 1.5 GHz Scorpion CPU and Adreno 220 GPU. The handset comes with a full 1.0 GB of RAM memory as well as 16 GB of built-in, user accessible storage. A microSD slot has been included for storage expansion.

Video capture is provided at a high resolution 1,080P HD by the rear mounted 8.0 megapixel camcorder, and a front facing 2.0 megapixel chat cam also provides video call support. Facebook, Twitter, Picasa and YouTube social media applications have been pre-installed, and Google is present in the form of Google Talk, Google Maps, Google Search and Gmail applications.  Buy the Samsung Galaxy Note starting at $199.
