Samsung Galaxy Note – Big Phone or Small Tablet?

The Samsung Galaxy Note provides what is the first display in the 4G LTE smartphone marketplace to go over 5.0 inches, at 5.3 inches. And with its accompanying S Pen stylus which comes integrated with preloaded native applications, you can now send text messages, doodle and draw, or take notes in your own handwriting. However, the Samsung Galaxy Note is a full-fledged smartphone, offering a powerful and speedy processor, a full feature set, large display with high resolution, healthy dose of RAM memory and 8.0 megapixel camcorder. So the question remains. Is the Samsung Galaxy Note a smartphone or a tablet? Actually, it’s a lot of both.

And while the device measures 5.78 x 3.27 x 0.38 inches (147 x 83 x 9.65 mm) and weighs 6.28 ounces (178 g), those numbers make it only slightly bulkier than the average 4G LTE handset, and many times more portable than a Tablet PC. The feature set on board and that large display definitely need plenty of juice to run, and the oversized 2,500 mAh battery is responsible for up to 26 hours talk time and 40 days standby from a single charge. Those numbers dwarf the 4G averages of 8.0 hours talk time and 16 days standby.

On the 5.30 inch screen, an overall resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels is delivered at 285 pixels per inch to the Super AMOLED display. 16 million unique colors are represented, and standard light and proximity sensors are on board. The handset is navigated through capacitive, multitouch gestures with your hand, as well as the S Pen stylus. The S Pen for the Samsung Galaxy Note allows you to write notes on pictures that you have taken, handwrite text messages instead of using a keyboard, and delivers a host of other artistic and creative features.

Samsung chose an Exynos microchip set for their note 4G Android handset, and included in that hardware package is a dual core 1.5 GHz Arm Cortex A9 central processor and graphics dedicated Mali 400MP chip. 16 GB of built-in storage is present, and a microSD slot allows for storage expansion. 1.0 GB of RAM memory is also on board. Samsung borrowed the impressive camera package from their popular Samsung Galaxy  S II devices, delivering a rear mounted 8.0 megapixel camcorder and front facing 2.0 megapixel chat cam to the Galaxy Note handset. That rear device provides video capture at 1080P HD resolution, and offers autofocus, multishot, preloaded scenes, smile detection and panorama features.
