The Galaxy Note II 4G Android smartphone/tablet has sold more than 3 million units in just over one month, according to South Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung. It took only 37 days from launch to reach that number, and debuted in the United States on the T-Mobile HSPA+ network with blazing speeds of up to 42 Mb per second on October 24. One of the first handsets to deliver 2.0 GB of RAM system memory, the handset is also the first from Samsung to deliver the Jelly Bean 4.1 Android operating system out-of-the-box.
Samsung has included their TouchWiz UI Android overlay, which supports multitouch, capacitive gestures or the integrated S Pen smart stylus for device navigation. The Galaxy Note II measures 5.94 x 3.16 x 0.37 inches (151 x 80 x 9 mm), and weighs 6.3 ounces (179 g). That makes it heavier and larger than the typical 4G smartphone, and the Galaxy Note II delivers the largest screen found on any mobile handset.
The 5.55 inch Super AMOLED display allows for true HD viewing with a 16 to 9 aspect ratio, and a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 2 protects against scratching and chipping. Resolution on the display runs 720 x 1,280 pixels, at the high end of the smartphone marketplace, delivered at 265 pixels every inch. More than 16 million separate colors are used when rendering visuals, and standard light and proximity sensors offer auto brightness adjustment and battery conservation.
Talk time on the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II 4G is impressive for a smartphone with a power chomping quad core processor, at 15.0 hours from a single battery charge. 12.0 days of standby is also offered from a single charge of the 3,100 mA cell on board. 16 GB of data storage are built-in, with microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC support for external memory cards up to 64 GB. The above-mentioned 2.0 GB RAM memory on board the Galaxy Note II is double the average 4G smartphone offering.
The chip set on board is a Samsung Exynos 4 (4412) suite, with a quad core 1.6 GHz ARM CPU at its core. An ARM Mali-400 MP4 (Quad-Core) graphics processor is also on board, and Near Field Communications (NFC) support is present out-of-the-box. The handset delivers DLNA wireless video out connectivity, can function as a central hub or hotspot for multiple wireless devices, and the front facing chat cam offers video call support. The 8.0 megapixel camcorder on the back of the Galaxy Note II records video in 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (1,080p HD) and at 30 frames per second.
