The AT&T Samsung GalaxyS II model was not the first to hit the scene, in fact, Samsung released their Galaxy S II Android smartphone overseas before allowing it to come to North America. And impressively, the Galaxy S II Global phone broke a Samsung sales record, selling 10 million units in the first five months it was available overseas. Samsung is a South Korean consumer-electronics company, so it makes sense that the largest portion of sales has come from their native country in those first five months after launching, with 3.6 million units sold.
The European market sold just over 3.4 million units in that same time-frame, with the rest of Southeast Asia, excluding Korea, chipping in 2.3 million units. Oddly enough, or perhaps not oddly at all, the record that the Samsung Galaxy S II broke was held by its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S, which took seven months to sell 10 million units when first launched.
The phone has been available in the United States for approximately 3 weeks now, and sales numbers cannot be confirmed. However, sales estimates using different sets of metrics and other online data have led to speculation by smartphone market analysts and number crunchers that US sales have continued the early success of this much-anticipated Android smartphone. And while obviously some software changes have to be made for the GalaxyS II to operate on AT&T’s 4G mobile broadband network, aside from that, the phone is basically unchanged from the original launched in Europe and Asia.
As one of the thinnest handsets Samsung has ever designed, the ATT Samsung GalaxyS II is small when compared to other 4G handsets, measuring only 4.96 x 2.60 x 0.35 inches (126 x 66 x 9 mm), with that 0.35 thickness making it one of the thinnest smartphones in the mobile marketplace. And at only 4.3 ounces (122 grams), is one of the lighter 4G phones, and is average in weight for all 3G and 4G smartphones on the market.
Samsung has built their phone around their own internal parts and software, using their Super AMOLED Plus display technology that offers 480 x 800 pixel resolution on the 4.3 inch capacitive touch screen. They also provided their own processor, a 1.2 GHz Exynos dual core chip. 1.0 GB of RAM memory is also on board. Buy the Samsung GalaxyS II for AT&T starting at $144.99.
