When you’re the second best anything, life is pretty good. Such is the case for AT&T’s United States version of the Samsung Galaxy S II that broke Samsung sales records in Europe and Asia. That handset sold 10 million copies in its first five months, and that is without the support of the tech-ravenous US market. The Samsung GalaxyS II for AT&T is the United States version of that device which most closely resembles the European and Asian model. Just last week, the Samsung Galaxy S II for AT&T’s 4G network received second place voting in the coveted Best New Mobile Device category at the world’s largest 4G-dedicated Global Conference and Expo in Chicago.
Samsung is not too upset about that second place finish, for two reasons. First off, out of the literally hundreds of 4G capable mobile devices that could have received the 4G World award, second place is more than respectable. The other reason Samsung is content with that finish is that the Samsung Galaxy S II for T-Mobile tied the AT&T model for second place, and Sprint’s Galaxy S II version, the Epic Touch 4G, took the top spot. Samsung landed three phones in the top two spots at 4G World, and shortly thereafter received news from Reuters that they had leapfrogged Apple as the worldwide leader in smartphone sales.
Samsung shipped approximately 28 million smartphones globally in Q3, accounting for almost 1/4 the entire global number. Global sales of Galaxy S II models stand at the 30 million unit mark and growing. AT&T decided to keep a virtually identical design to the Samsung Galaxy S II that was so popular in its overseas launch, figuring that if it wasn’t broken, they had no need to fix it. The same 4.3 inch capacitive touch screen with 480 x 800 pixel resolution is present, and offers support for 16 million colors by way of Samsung’s Super AMOLED Plus display technology. Buy the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II starting at $144.99.
Also identical is the handset design. Sticking with the standard rectangular shape and black color, known in the mobile marketplace as a candy bar form factor, the ATT Samsung GalaxyS II arrives as one of the thinnest handsets in the entire mobile marketplace, and measures 4.96 x 2.60 x 0.35 inches (126 x 66 x 9 mm), weighing the 4G market average of 4.3 ounces (122 g). Samsung also added their own 1.2 GHz Exynos dual core processor and 1.0 GB of RAM memory.
