According to a recent release by Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley, the globally popular Samsung Galaxy S III Android smartphone has done what no other smartphone has been able to do in the United States. As a consumer-electronics analyst for Canaccord, Walkley regularly keeps track of smartphone sales by checking in with retailers around the US. In his own words, “We believe this is the first month since the iPhone 4S launched in October 2011 that it was not the top-selling smartphone in the U.S. market.” That is probably due to a couple of major factors, but the Galaxy S III was gaining popularity at the correct time, and stepped in to snag the number one smartphone sales spot in the United States.
The Samsung Galaxy S III for Verizon is on sale now starting at 149.99.
Walkley pointed out that his frequent monitoring of 50 to 100 retail outlets selling smartphones in the US also pointed to continued weakness for Nokia, HTC, and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM). And Walkley’s data is about as unimpeachable as it can get, since he has been performing these monthly checks for over 10 years now. Coupled with expectant iPhone devotees waiting on the larger screen iPhone 5 as opposed to the 3.5 inch screen on the iPhone 4S, the Galaxy S III was released at just the right time, selling over 10 million units in less than its first two months of availability.
The Samsung Galaxy S III 4G LTE Android smartphone is just the next device in a long and successful line of Galaxy mobile handsets. Launched officially on July 12 on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE in the United States, the handset offers a large and high resolution screen, Near Field Communications (NFC) wireless support, high-resolution video capture and the widely regarded Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system out-of-the-box.
The handset also delivers the Color App feature, which allows quick recording and posting of 60 second videos complete with sound, as well as still images, to your Facebook wall. NFC support means access out-of-the-box to applications which share data wirelessly like Android Beam, and wireless retail payment processing apps like Google Wallet. The handset offers has a Share Shot camera feature which allows you to set up a temporary photo sharing network with other Samsung Galaxy S III handset users.
The 0.34 inch (8.6 mm) profile is one of the slimmest on any 4G smartphone, and the 4.80 inch display is one of the largest. Pixel density runs 316 pixels per inch for an overall display resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. A protective layer of Gorilla Glass 2 overlays the display, and a powerful 1.5 GHz dual core CPU joins a separate Adreno 225 GPU in the microchip suite. The GS III is one of the first handsets with 2.0 GB of RAM system memory, and 32 GB of built-in, user accessible data storage is provided. 1,080P HD video capture is provided by the rear facing 8.0 MP camcorder.
