The Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone is well on its way to 60 million global units sold, and at this year’s Mobile World Congress was named the Best Smartphone of 2012. Beating out smartphones like the iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC Droid DNA 4G, the handset followed successfully in the footsteps of the popular Samsung Galaxy S II. Already capturing the coveted “Stuff” magazine award as the Gadget of the Year in 2012, the phone recently added another Smartphone of the Year blue ribbon.
The Samsung Galaxy S III 16GB Black is available for a reduced sale price now starting at $29.99.
At the third annual Ghana Telecom Awards, the Galaxy S III took home another title designating it as the best smartphone of last year. Chief Retail Officer at Samsung Michael Bosompem said that his company is humbled by the award, and he went on to thank the customers who made the phone so popular. The phone sold more than 40,000 units in the small market of Ghana, which translates to approximately $200 million US.
Receiving awards in markets which are so small compared to the smartphone-crazed demographic in the United States shows the true global support and popularity of the Galaxy S III smartphone. The handset still sells incredibly well around the world, and the 16 GB Verizon variant was recently spotted on at least one online retailer’s website for the bargain bin price of $29 on contract. Not a bad price tag for one of the most important smartphones of the last several years, and one which also recently received a software upgrade that delivers some of the most popular features delivered by the Galaxy S4.
The Verizon version of the Samsung Galaxy S III has received an update which allows you to split the large HD display into two separate and equally sized mini-screens. You can then use each of those independently, or move back and forth between the two, sharing and passing information and data. The Galaxy S III arrived in a slim and light form factor, measuring just 0.34 inches (8.6 mm) in thickness, and weighing just 4.70 ounces (133 g).
The handset is approaching its one year anniversary in the United States, and offers a large 4.80 inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 720 by 1,280 pixels. The Samsung Galaxy S III is also capable of up to 15.0 hours of talk time from a full battery charge, and is powered by a dual core Snapdragon S4 1.5 GHz processor. The GS III is available in 16 GB and 32 GB models with a microSD slot for extra storage expansion, and offers a substantial 2.0 GB of RAM memory. The phone can also provide simultaneous HD video and image capture with its rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder.
