The Mobile World Congress, the world’s largest phone show in the world, is just around the corner. This year, the GSMA, its organizing association, will be giving out awards to the best devices of the year. MWC 2013 will be held in Barcelona, Spain and the nominees for the Best Smartphone of the Year have already been announced. And as expected, the Samsung Galaxy S III is one of the nominees announced along with the Samsung Galaxy Note II, the HTC Droid DNA, the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Apple iPhone 5.
The inclusion of the Samsung Galaxy S III among the nominees for the Best Smartphone of the Year did not come as a surprise at all. After all, the handset is the current flagship device of the Korean smartphone and tablet manufacturer and with this status comes the fact that the handset boasts of an impressive resume that it brings to the table. With the fire-breathing components it has in its internals, the Samsung Galaxy S III is also able to boast of an impressive set of capabilities not usually found in other flagship devices.
Because of the power of the Samsung Galaxy S III, the popularity of the handset also reached a level never seen in a smartphone before. Such is the popularity of the handset that delays were seen on a global scale before it launched in several markets due to the shortage of stocks of the handset. This shortage was caused by the massive demand for the Samsung Galaxy S III that its manufacturer was hard-pressed to keep up with the production of the superphone. And as a testament to its popularity, the sales figures of the handset already reached the 40 million mark since getting released during the latter parts of May last year.
The Samsung Galaxy S III was released in a myriad of colorways and its chassis measured 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm making it a very sexy and streamlined device. Its catch weight of 134 grams on the other hand made it light as a feather despite its size. There were issues with the build quality of the handset but these were only minor and negligible when you take into consideration the power it packs under the hood.
The handset already runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for its operating system and this draws power from the handset’s QualComm MSM8960 SnapDragon chipset. With this SoC, the Samsung Galaxy S III can rely on its dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor and 2GB of RAM to deliver the computing power it requires for a snappy and lag-free operation. The handset can be had in a 16GB and a 32GB edition when it came to storage space but it also came with a dedicated microSD card slot in its chassis for memory expansion, an option hopelessly lacking in some other competing flagship devices. As for its display, the Samsung Galaxy S III sports a 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED HD panel with a 1280 x 720 resolution while its dual-shooter configuration includes a rear 8MP shooter and a front 1.9MP snapper.
