The Samsung Galaxy S II handset was awarded the coveted Best Smartphone title at the 2012 Mobile World Conference (MWC) and was a successful offering from that company, showing global support. The Galaxy S III followed competently on its heels, and once again earned the Best Smartphone award for Samsung at MWC 2013. And the Galaxy S III not only matched, but improved on the best-selling global sales that the Galaxy S II achieved.
Easily the bestselling Android phone and Samsung smartphone of all time, the Galaxy S III sold 20 million units in only its first three months. Samsung recently stated that more than 50 million units have been sold of the Galaxy S III, a number which had previously been reserved for Apple iPhones. With the recent release of the HTC One and Galaxy S4 smartphones, online retailers slashing the price of the Galaxy S III will almost certainly guarantee its continued sales and global popularity.
For instance, Amazon is one online retailer who has reduced the purchase price of the Galaxy S III substantially. They are offering the 16 GB Galaxy S III from AT&T, Verizon and Sprint for anywhere from one penny to $39 on contract. And while the brand-new Samsung Galaxy S4 has analysts predicting 100 million units sold during its lifetime, bargain barrel prices like the ones currently attached to the Galaxy S III will guarantee that sales do not flag on that particular handset.
The Galaxy S III has been around in the United States since June of last year, and arrives in a very slim and very light form factor considering the size of the screen it delivers. The phone measures just 0.34 inches (8.6 mm) in thickness, and weighs only 4.70 ounces (133 g). This is substantially slimmer and lighter than other phones which offer a 4.80 inch display, and the Super AMOLED screen on the Galaxy S III is protected against everyday abuse with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 2.
The handset delivers 720 x 1,280 pixel resolution, offering 16 million different colors at the rate of 306 pixels per inch. Powered by a speedy dual core 1.5 GHz CPU, the Galaxy S III also delivers a microSD slot for storage expansion and 2.0 GB of RAM memory. Simultaneous HD video and image capture is delivered by the rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder, which also records video at 1,080P HD resolution. The phone also offers a front facing chat cam, NFC wireless support and popular online destinations Facebook, YouTube, Picasa and Twitter pre-installed.
