The Galaxy S III is one of the hottest and most popular smartphones currently, so its recent industry praise comes as no shock. The handset helped South Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung to record profits the last two quarters, and was the first smartphone to outsell an Apple iPhone when both handsets were offered from the same carriers. Recently the best-selling mobile handset received recognition for its global popularity, garnering an important industry accolade.
At the Mobile World Conference (MWC) every year in Barcelona, Spain, the mobile industry holds the biggest mobile expo of the year. This is the showcase annually for brand-new mobile devices to debut, and many coveted industry awards are handed out to recognize important mobile devices from the previous year. This year the Galaxy S III 4G Android smartphone took home the MWC Best Smartphone award, and helped Samsung receive manufacturer recognition as well.
That South Korean company was recognized as mobile Device Manufacturer of the Year in what was anything but a surprise announcement. The Galaxy S III helped Samsung pass Apple as the global market leader in smartphone and mobile phone manufacturing, and this is the second year in a row in which Samsung has taken home that title. The Galaxy S II was the main reason for Samsung’s 2012 award, effectively showing that the successful Galaxy S line of smartphones is only improving.
Samsung hopes that continues with the Galaxy S IV smartphone which will be officially announced and revealed on March 14 in a special single company ceremony in New York City. Debuting their upcoming S IV handset in the Big Apple reiterates Samsung’s goal to replace Apple on all fronts as the leading smartphone manufacturer in the US. The Device Manufacturer of the Year award annually recognizes “technical innovation in the mobile marketplace.”
MWC hosts pointed to the Samsung Galaxy S III delivering a “world beating smartphone experience with uncompromised performance.” The Samsung Galaxy S III has sold more than 50 million units worldwide, and can currently be found at select online retailers with a sub $100 price tag on contract. JK Shin is Samsung’s Head of IT and Mobile Communications, and he called 2012 “a defining year for Samsung that saw us set new records in the mobile industry” thanks primarily to the Galaxy S III smartphone. The Galaxy S IV formal launch date has been rumored for April 22, which would wisely steal limelight and sales from the upcoming Sony Experia Z and LG Optimus G Pro launches in the US.
