The Android 4.4 KitKat operating system update was slated for the first quarter in the new year for the Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone. That still appears to be the case, but Samsung recently moved up their predicted launch schedule to late January. This is good news for those Galaxy S4 smartphone owners and shoppers who want to celebrate the new year in 2014 with the latest and greatest Android operating system. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is currently sale priced at several online retailers, such as the Amazon Wireless store.
Samsung did not release a specific date that they would be launching the new operating system, and because wireless carriers have to pass the OS upgrade on to their customers at their whim, this is usually the case. A dependable leak from French wireless carrier SFR puts the Android release for the popular and bestselling Samsung flagship Galaxy S4 handset at late January as well. If that is the case, there is a good chance that the latest version of the OS available at that time, KitKat 4.4.2 will be the software which hits the phone.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy Note II were instrumental in moving Samsung past Apple as the worldwide leader in global smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2013. The two handsets have been extremely popular, and have sold well for the carriers which support them, and will both get KitKat at roughly the same time. Just recently the Galaxy S4 received a boost up to Android 4.3, but with KitKat 4.4.2 now officially released, all eyes are on the new operating system boost.
What can Samsung Galaxy S4 owners expect with the new Android 4.4 OS update? Because the software can run on just 512 MB of RAM memory, it allows the handset to deliver a speedier user interface, as there is substantial room left of the 2.0 GB of RAM the Galaxy S4 offers. The 4.4.2 version should include minor bug fixes and major enhancements such as a restyled status bar, a new nav bar, a more capable full-screen mode and closed captioning support.
Security has also been improved on the new KitKat operating system, as has more efficient and more intelligent power use. Better support for app development is also on board, and you can now look up contacts directly from the dial pad because of the advancements made to the phone dialer. The Galaxy S4 camera will also improve the touch to focus option of its camera, and new filter effects have been delivered to the gallery.
