gs4The Galaxy S4 is likely to be such a popular and best-selling handset this year that the mere announcement of its upcoming arrival has sent prices on the globally best-selling Galaxy S III plummeting downward. This is obviously an excellent opportunity for smartphone shoppers, and the Amazon Wireless store for one is an online retailer who has dropped the price of the 16 GB Galaxy S III on Sprint to $9.99 on contract. This “nearly free” retail offering belies the fact that the Galaxy S III has sold more than 50 million units around the world.

The 16 GB Galaxy S III for Sprint delivers NFC wireless support, popular applications Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Picasa, and one of the largest and highest resolution displays of any 4G smartphone. Released last June, the handset became an immediate bestseller for Sprint, and recently benefited by Sprint’s expansion of their first ever 4G LTE system in the United States to more than 58 major markets. The Galaxy S III also received a bump up to the Jelly Bean 4.1 Android operating system.

Samsung has done an excellent job in keeping the Galaxy S III slim and light, and in those regards the handset outperforms most all other smartphones offering the same size display. The 4.80 inch Super AMOLED screen is found on a body with dimensions of 5.38 x 2.78 x 0.34 inches (136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm) and a weight of 4.70 ounces (133 g). That display is protected against your everyday abuse with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 2, and delivers more than 16 million colors at a rate of 306 pixels per inch. This gives the handset an overall resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels.

A full 9.20 hours of talk time is capable from the handset’s 2,100 mA battery, and the 8.0 megapixel camcorder built into the back of the Galaxy S III offers 1,080P HD video capture, as well as simultaneous HD video and image recording. The popular Galaxy S III is powered by a dual core 1.5 GHz CPU, and delivers a full 2.0 GB of RAM system memory. Also available in a 32 GB model, microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC support for memory cards up to 64 GB in size is offered by the built-in microSD slot.

The 16 GB Galaxy S III for Sprint also delivers a built-in music player with both custom and preset equalizers, and offers video out options. That music player can filter according to album title, artist name and play lists, and the handset can be used as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot for multiple wireless devices. A built-in web browser offers Internet access out-of-the-box, and the Galaxy S III for Sprint is capable of simultaneous voice and data access.
