Samsung is by no means just a smart phone manufacturer, as the company sells most consumer electronics products like TVs, laptops, DVD players etc; however, despite the diversity of its product line, almost two thirds of the company’s revenue comes from its range of mobile devices. Therefore, as the sales of its flagship smart phone the Galaxy S4 recently declined, Samsung’s investors and analysts were so worried that the company had to plan a strategic conference in order to discuss its future plans and chart its course of action.
It appears that over the course of the last three months, Samsung’s profits from mobile devices have gone down by 13%, which has led to the investors getting a bit anxious. They feel that the sector from which Samsung had earned the most of its profits, the high-end smart phone market, is now becoming saturated. It is felt that the low-end smart phone market, especially in emerging regions, is where there is the most scope for growth; however, that particular segment also makes it difficult for manufacturers to make much profit. Considering this, Samsung plans to meet with around 400 analysts and investors in Seoul this November for discussing its strategy for growth in the long term.
In other news, as the release of Microsoft’s new Surface tablets approaches, more information regarding these is becoming available. Microsoft has already cut prices of Surface models from 2012 as well as those of the touch cover; however, according to new information, the next versions of the Surface tablet will come with another type of cover along with the Type and Touch covers. According to rumors, this could be the Power Cover, which as the name suggests, should house an extra battery in order to extend the battery life of the tablet.
Along with the new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets, the Power Cower is also said to be compatible with the 2012 Surface Pro. It appears that among the improvements made in the new Surface Pro was the addition of the connector which will allow it to use the battery packs in the cover. Reports suggest that the Power Cover will have a keyboard just like the one on the Type Cover; however the cover will add .38 inches to the thickness and 1.1 pounds to the weight of the Surface tablets. The Power Cover is expected to be launched along with the new Surface tablets.
