In a rather surprising move Samsung unveiled new phones running the Android platform and the new Windows Phone 8 platform. This is probably the company’s move to regain its lost ground because of the trials it was losing around the world. Samsung has a marginal lead over Apple in the global smartphone market and it is aiming to defend that and the new devices are quite possibly going to help it do that. With the success of the Galaxy Note, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note II among other devices at an event in Berlin. The most surprising announcement was that of the Windows Phone 8 devices as everyone was of the opinion Nokia would unveil them first.

The Note II is clearly Samsung’s best device in the lineup as it takes off in the new segment that was created by the Note. It has a more powerful processor and a larger screen and comes with an improved stylus for better handling and input. It also features Google’s Android Jellybean that has enhanced security. Samsung also released a device called the Galaxy Camera that features the Android OS but is just a camera. It has an impressive lens with 21x optical zoom and a 16 megapixel sensor and Samsung is sure that this will revolutionize the point and shoot camera market because of its connectivity capabilities.

Coming to the Windows Phone device, the ATIV S was announced towards the end and it had analysts stunned for a moment. This goes to show that Microsoft is not backing Nokia as was thought earlier but this doesn’t mean Samsung was out to get the Finnish manufacturer. Nokia’s devices are still expected to be a hit but the phone from Samsung raises the expectations with its 1.5GHz dual core processor and a large 4.8” screen.

Nokia is set to reveal its new phones on September 5th which is likely going to be an interesting event. Investors are eagerly awaiting the devices which are what Nokia is resting its hopes on for the future. Samsung earlier was at the receiving end of judgments in patent infringement suits against Apple and was ordered to pay up $1.05 billion in damages but is going to appeal the same. Moreover, it might get its devices banned from sale in the US as well as South Korea.
