In terms of showing some serious and timely update love for its aging devices, Motorola is one manufacturer that doesn’t have the greatest track record for that matter. However, the manufacturer makes up for this by ensuring that the software update that it releases for any of the devices in its Android lineup is as perfect as it can be. And how does Motorola does this? The manufacturer conducts a soak test before a software update gets rolled out.

For those not in the know, a soak test is conducted by Motorola wherein an upcoming update is released to a small number of handsets wherein the users taking part in the soak test are asked to give feedback to the manufacturer regarding the viability of the said update. This way, Motorola can easily identify bugs and other potential problems. And since the update is released to a contained number of handsets, there is no pressure for the company to come up with a quick fix to rectify what a problem that could have hit a million handsets if the soak test was not conducted in the first place.

This time around, Motorola is planning a soak test for the Motorola Photon 4G and has already announced that it is looking for one thousand Motorola Photon 4G owners and users to take part in the said soak test. At this point in time, there is no solid word as to what the said software update might contain and optimists are crossing their fingers that this will finally be the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Motorola Photon 4G. Realists on the other hand claim that there is no way that this could update the Motorola Photon 4G to the latest version of the Android operating system because the manufacturer is not exactly rolling out the ICS update to the handsets in its lineup. In fact, we are yet to see ICS land on any of the Motorola handsets available in the market today and even a couple of its high-end devices such as the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx are still in the Evaluation and Planning Stage in terms of ICS development. However, ICS or no ICS, we still consider any update as beneficial especially if it brings a lot of goodies and treats to the Motorola Photon 4G.

For the uninitiated, the Motorola Photon 4G is one of the high-end devices in the lineup of Motorola and despite its aging status, the handset still has an impressive specs sheet under the hood. It has an NVIDIA Tegra 2 AP20H chipset at the heart of its operations with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor running at 1 GHz and a full gigabyte of RAM to provide the handset with the computing power it requires. The storage space of the handset is pegged at 16GB and this can still be expanded to as much as 32GB should the need arise. As for its display, the Motorola Photon 4G packs a 4.3-inch TFT panel made from Gorilla Glass and has a qHD resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. It also has a very capable shooting department with a rear-facing 8-megapixel camera and a front-facing VGA sapper for video calls and self-portraits.
