At the moment, one of the more anticipated handsets to hit the shelves is the Sony Xperia Z, the upcoming flagship device of Sony. The handset has had more than its fair share of digital ink in the past couple of weeks but these were mostly good things about the handset. Well, for a flagship handset, we wouldn’t expect anything less given the fact that its top tier devices from the past have always played second fiddle to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S III.
Right now, Sony is already in the final stages of preparation for the international release of the Sony Xperia Z and the manufacturer has taken a step that will endear it more to the developer community – and to the power users and the hackers as well. As it stands, the manufacturer has already released the kernel source code for the Sony Xperia Z even though the handset is yet to make its debut in the shelves.
While this piece of news may not mean much to the average smartphone user, the hackers and the power users of the developer communities will definitely have a field day because once they get hold of the kernel source code of the Sony Xperia Z, they can already do their stuff, work their magic and turn this into better and faster custom ROMs and kernels for the handset.
With this development, we can already expect custom ROMs and kernels for the Sony Xperia Z to fall like manna from the heaven – which is basically what the Android ecosystem is all about – tons of personalization and customization options for your device.
As for the Sony Xperia Z, the handset reached official status when it was unveiled back in January but until now, the specifics as to when the handset is expected to make its debut in the shelves for public consumption hasn’t been nailed yet. In terms of its design and aesthetics, the Sony Xperia Z looks like your typical Android-powered smartphone with its black paint job but the streamlined profile of the handset gives it a very classy and elegant air. The handset has dimensions of 139 x 71 x 739 mm and it tips the scales at 146 grams. Given its flagship status, it can only be expected that the Sony Xperia Z have a solid build quality but aside from that, the handset is also IP57 certified making it dust and water resistant.
Under the hood, the Sony Xperia Z is powered by a QualComm APQ8064 SnapDragon chipset which basically brings to the table a quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor and 2GB of RAM. The storage space on board the device on the other hand is pegged at 16GB and in addition to that, the Sony Xperia Z packs support for memory expansion via its microSD card slot. As for its display, the Sony Xperia Z sports a 5.0-inch TFT panel with a 1920 x 1080 resolution while its camera department boasts of a rear 13.1MP shooter and a front 2.2MP snapper.
