While the likes of HTC, Motorola, LG and Samsung are making users of their handsets a bit disappointed with the apparent delays and seeming lack of communication with regard to Ice Cream Sandwich updates, Sony on the other hand is coming out as one of the best smartphone manufacturers in terms of bringing the latest version of the Google mobile operating system to its lineup of Xperia devices as it promised in the past.
That being said, the manufacturer is now in the process of rolling out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update to the Sony Xperia Mini Pro. The update is not hitting the airwaves via OTA though, so you will need to hook up your Sony Xperia Mini Pro to your computer and fire up the PC Companion software of Sony to get the update process rolling. If nothing is happening, be reminded that the ICS update for the Sony Xperia Mini Pro is being released in batches so if you still haven’t received the update yet, don’t fret – it will definitely land on your handset one way or the other.
If you are unsure whether your handset supports the ICS update, all you need to do is take off the back cover of the handset and remove the battery to be able to check its SI (Sales Item) numbers. This 8-digit SI number can then be checked against the support site of Sony to see if the SI number of your Sony Xperia Mini Pro is already on the list of handsets that are slated to get the ICS update. If the SI number of your handset is nowhere to be found, maybe you just need to wait a little longer for the update to land on your device but be assured that your handset will still get that Android 4.0 refresh.
While most manufacturers are getting their high-end devices upgraded to the latest Android version, the Sony Xperia Mini Pro is said to be somewhere in the mid-range category but Sony still managed to find a way to get it upgraded. With this development, it will be interesting to see how a modestly-equipped handset like the Sony Xperia Mini Pro will get to handle Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in its guts.
As for the handset, the Sony Xperia Mini Pro is not your run of the mill high-end handset but is more likely an average midranger as mentioned earlier. Its internals revolve around the QualComm MSM8255 SnapDragon chipset of the handset. Its computing power on the other hand is delivered by a 1 GHz Scorpion and 512 MB of RAM. The storage space of the handset is malnourished compared to today’s standards with its onboard memory only coming up to a meager 400 MB. This can still be expanded though through the microSD card slot of the handset so the meager internal memory of the Sony Xperia Mini Pro shouldn’t be an issue, really. The display of the handset is a 3.0-inch LED-backlit LCD with a 480 x 320 resolution while its camera department features a 5MP shooter at its back panel and a VGA video call camera sitting out front.
