Whenever Google releases a new version of its Android operating system for mobile devices, you can always expect that the high-end devices currently available in the market will always get first dibs on the latest iteration of the Google mobile operating system. Take the case of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for example. Samsung first released the update to the Samsung Galaxy S II while HTC rolled out the update to the HTC Sensation. The common denominator here? Flagship devices usually get first dibs on a new Android version.
Sony Mobile whoever is one manufacturer that seems to buck the trend of doing so. When you come to think of it, the company’s ICS schedule shows that its midrangers actually got to taste ICS first while the those from its high-end lineup where left waiting for the update to land. We’re talking about the Xperia Mini Pro and Xperia Active, both Sony midrange smartphones, getting ICS way ahead of high-end Sony handsets such as the Sony Xperia S.
The Sony Xperia S already went ahead and got a taste of the Ice Cream Sandwich update but there is still one high-end Sony handset that’s left waiting for ICS and that is the Sony Xperia P. Announced as early as February at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona but only made it to the shelves in May, the Sony Xperia P is a decent performer but was saddled with Android 2.3 Gingerbread under the hood. If you happen to rock a Sony Xperia P for your mobile weapon of choice, it looks like your months of waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich to finally become available on your handset is about to come to a screeching end.
As it stands, the Android 4.0 refresh for the Sony Xperia P is just around the corner and this much was confirmed by Sony India in its official FaceBook page. According to the Indian arm of the manufacturer, Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich can be expected to land on the Sony Xperia P between August 19 and August 25. Sad to say, there was no confirmation given if the scheduled rollout will only happen in the Indian subcontinent or if this will be a global release for that matter. If it is the former and you don’t happen to live in India, the update shouldn’t take that long to get to your territory given Sony’s track record.
As for the Sony Xperia P, the handset packs a NovaThor U8500 chipset in its internals to power its operations while the computing power needed by the smartphone is delivered by its dual-core 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor and 1GB of RAM. The internal storage onboard the Sony Xperia P comes up to 16GB but only 13GB of this is set aside for user content. Sad to say, there is no option for memory expansion on the Sony Xperia P. Display-wise, the Sony Xperia P packs a 4.0-inch LED-backlit LCD panel with a 540 x 960 resolution while its dual-shooter configuration consist of a rear 8MP shooter and a front VGA video call camera.
