Even though information about what carrier will get the Sony Xperia S smartphone, the announcement still made waves at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.  At the CES, Sony released information about the Xperia S and the Xperia ion, both of which are expected to be available some time in 2012.  The feature list for the Xperia is very impressive and is likely to gain Sony some followers who are looking for a higher end smartphone option.  This is another smartphone that is not coming with Android 4.0, but will be set for the update shortly after release.

The Sony Xperia has one of the larger displays that measure about 4.3-inches with over 340 pixels per inch.  The TFT display supports over 16 million colors and comes with scratch resistant glass for protection.  Battery life is listed at about 7.5 hours of talk time and about 450 hours of stand-by time, which isn’t bad for a smartphone that weighs in at around 5 ounces.  As far as power for the smartphone, that is provided by a dual-core processor from Qualcomm and is listed at 1.5 GHz, with a graphics processor to keep things smooth on the display.

Just about 1GB of RAM helps process things and 1500MB of upgradeable internal storage comes with the phone.  A microSD or microSDHC card can provide addition storage up to 32GB.  One feature that is likely to stand out to just about everyone is the fact that the Xperia is coming equipped with a 12.1MP camera on the back side.  The camera features auto-focus, touch to focus, stabilizer, face detection and Panorama options.  This camera might be the first over 8MP that is currently on the market.  A smaller 1.3MP camera on the front side is also available for video chatting, etc.

Browsing on the Xperia is made easier with support for HTML and Flash, as well as, built in options for Facebook, Twitter and Youtube uploads.  You will also notice support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections, as well as, a microUSB and HDMI port for external connections to the device.  Personal email is an option via the IMAP, POP3 and SMTP support and the Sony Xperia does support threaded messaging as well.  Navigation is provided by GPS and unlimited phonebook entries, organizer apps and a document viewer round out the list of features.  There currently is no price point set for this handset.
