Back in the day when Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was still the latest iteration of the Google mobile operating system, the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch was suddenly thrust into the limelight when reports came out that it will be the first carrier-branded handset released in US shores to get the Android 4.0 refresh. Furthermore, there were also reports that the wireless provider at that time was nearly finished with testing the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the handset which further fueled the speculations to that effect.
Sad to say, this is not to happen because the distinction of being the first carrier-branded handset in our side of the world to get the Android 4.0 refresh fell on the lap of the HTC Vivid 4G from AT&T after users of the handset found a way to use a dialer workaround which forced the handset to download the official ICS update. And the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch? It also got upgraded to ICS but a much later date.
Fast-forward to today, most of the handsets in the market now are waiting to get the upgrade to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch is again having its share of digital ink after reports came out that the handset is now getting the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update, albeit unofficially.
As it stands, an unofficial Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch has already surfaced and those interested in giving their handsets a taste of some Jelly Bean goodness can now download the pertinent files and have this leaked build flashed onto their smartphones. In addition to that, sources also claim that this leaked build of Jelly Bean could very well end up as the official final Android 4.1.2 OTA update that will get rolled out to the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch.
Rumors also indicate that Samsung is nearly done with testing the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch and a rollout is already imminent and could quite possibly happen before the end of 2012. Of course, everything is pure speculation right now and we are still waiting on Samsung and Sprint to release more details about this to put the rumors to rest.
As for the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, this is the variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II released by Sprint in US shores from yesteryear. The operation of the handset is powered by its Exynos chipset which brings into play a dual-core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor and a full gigabyte of RAM. Storage space on the handset is pegged at 16GB but a user has the option to have this expanded using the microSD card slot of the device. Display-wise, the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch sports a 4.52-inch SuperAMOLED panel with a 480 x 800 resolution while its camera department boasts of a rear 8MP shooter and a front 2MP video call and self-portrait camera.
