Back in the day, Nokia was one of the top smartphone manufacturers in the world with the apparent popularity of its E-Series line of devices. Sad to say, the Finnish smartphone manufacturer had to take the back seat when other big-name manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, HTC, Motorola and the like entered the competition and began flooding the market with their respective products. Nokia was turned into a mere spectator only getting a second chance to regain lost glory in the smartphone competition when it entered into a strategic alliance with software giant Microsoft to manufacture handsets for the Windows Phone ecosystem.

Nokia opened up its bid to become relevant again with the release of the Nokia Lumia 710 in US shores via T-Mobile where the handset became a hit. Nokia head honcho Stephen Elop even boasted that it is the comeback device of the manufacturer in US shelves and they are happy with the sales performance of the device where it consistently ranked among the Magenta carrier’s top sellers.

With the recent announcement of its new Windows Phone 8 devices, Nokia is once again partnering with T-Mobile to bring one of its new handsets to US shores via the shelves of the Magenta carrier. With this, T-Mobile has already announced the addition of the Nokia Lumia 810 to its Windows Phone lineup where it will be an exclusive to the carrier. For the uninitiated, the Nokia Lumia 810 is based on the recently-unveiled Nokia Lumia 820 which in turn will be released by AT&T in our side of the world.

Despite being based on the Lumia 820, the Nokia Lumia 810 is very different from the handset from a design standpoint. The handset looks more like an ugly slab of black plastic and is eerily reminiscent of some “block-ish” Android smartphones. In fact, there are rumors that T-Mobile had an influence on the design and aesthetics of the device because the Nokia Lumia 810 isn’t even close, design-wise, to anything released by the Finnish smartphone manufacturer in recent times.

Although the specs sheet of the Nokia Lumia 810 is somewhat close to that of the Lumia 820, it comes with several notable additions. The handset is bigger, albeit lighter than the AT&T version and comes with a slightly bigger battery pack that gives it 10.2 hours of talk time compared to the Lumia 820’s 7.5 hours.

Under the hood, the Windows Phone 8 operating system of the Nokia Lumia 810 is powered by its QualComm MSM8960 SnapDragon chipset with its dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor and 1GB of RAM. Storage space on the handset is expected to be pegged at 8GB while its display is same to that of the Lumia 820 which is a 4.3-inch ClearBlack-powered AMOLED panel with a 480 x 800 resolution. Its camera department on the other hand has some improvements with its rear 8MP shooter and front Skype HD-certified 1.2MP snapper.

The Nokia Lumia 810 is expected to make its debut in the shelves of T-Mobile “in the coming weeks” although a more specific date along with the handset’s price point is still unavailable as of yet.

  1. “Ugly slab of black plastic”? Nice piece of journalism. You’re an idiot. Many people, including myself, consider the Lumia 810 a beautiful phone. Stick with the facts and don’t include your personal preference when you write. You sounded stupid.
