Samsung may have beaten Nokia and Apple to release its new devices early on but there is no denying that the launch of the iPhone 5 is something everyone is waiting for. It is expected that the new version of the device from Apple is going to break all sales records and put Apple’s sales in the forefront again. The company has seen a slow second quarter, by its standards but all that is likely to change once the new phone is announced. There have been a lot of rumors surrounding it, particularly about its features and new characteristics and when all of them are put together, it appears that Apple has had a slight change in policy.
For starters, the mock ups of the new iPhone all talk about a larger screen. Until now, the iPhone has stuck with a 3.5” screen which is apparently the right size for comfortable usage with one hand. The new iPhone is going with an elongated version to 4.0” and perhaps a modified aspect ratio. The new screen is going to be a welcome change for it as its competition now features huge displays, as big as 4.8”.
The next interesting thing is the smaller dock connector. This might be better for the future for Apple but it may not go down well with existing customers who are used to the peripherals. A modified dock connector would mean that the new iPhone will not be compatible with speaker docks and the like. Unless Apple is going to offer a hardware modification that will enable backward compatibility, peripherals will have to be phased out too.
The form factor is likely going to remain the same if one believes the consistency in the designs of covers that come up from various manufacturers. The headphone jack also has a new place and the general opinion is that the device is taller than its counterparts. Essentially, this means that the phone is retaining the bezel around the screen, one if its trademark aspects of deisgn.
News has been around that Sharp, the Japanese electronics giant that makes displays for Apple is having trouble in mass producing the displays with “in cell” technology. This is bad news for Apple, especially as the possibility of a short supply of iPhones looms ahead. However, the company has remained quiet about the launch date so it just might get everything sorted out.
