As the smartphone business continues to grow, one common trend noted among many Android users is that they are least informed about the functions of the handset that they own. Statistics claim that Android is only supplying cheap smartphones and its users have no loyalty towards the platform as such. One statistic shows that 70% of Android users don’t know how to access the Wi-Fi feature on their handsets. iPhone users on the other hand don’t seem to in a better position either. Only 29% of the users in the US connect to the internet using their carrier, and the same number drops to 13% in the United Kingdom.

Android was a little better off in this aspect as 68% of the users used their carrier’s services to access the internet. One cause of concern for Android is that only 7% of the users are using the latest version of the Android. In comparison, 80% of iOS users are using the latest version of the operating system. This again highlights the fact that many users are unaware of how to update their phones and are also unaware of which phones are compatible with the update.

Releasing an array of stats highlighting recent trends, The Street showed that Android, despite being dominant in market share, was the more neglected OS. Developers wrote 69% of new apps for iOS first in comparison to Android’s 30%. iPhone users also contributed to majority of the web traffic with a majority of 61.2% from its Safari browser. Android continued its string of abysmal stats with a contribution of a mere 18.6% from its stock browser. This statistics prompted The Street into making undermining comments about Android users. This however is merely the opinion of The Street and the general notion is expected to be different.

There are many discrepancies in these statements as mere numbers and percentage scores cannot be used in determining the general customer awareness. Essentially it boils downs to how these numbers are interpreted. Take for example the case of Wi-Fi numbers; iPhone users are required to switch their Wi-Fi on for smooth streaming of videos on YouTube. The same is not the case with Android users as they have the option of using 3G. Until the release of iOS 6, these extra incentives will ensure that iPhone users use these extra incentives that increase Wi-Fi usage. These numbers may are surely not wrong and there are different ways to interpret them, The Street has chosen a way that accuses Android users of being less informed, while there are reasons that say otherwise.
