As is usually the case with a smartphone launched by a respected manufacturer and backed by a popular operating system, the Motorola X “Google phone” has been garnering respect and admiration from multiple industry executives. Smartphone bigwigs have recently been heard lauding the device, and it will be the first handset that Motorola Mobility will release since they were acquired by Google last year. One noted mobile network executive even called the handset a “game changer” for the smartphone marketplace.
Hugh Bradlow is the chief technology officer for Australian mobile network Telstra, and he recently stated that the Motorola X phone is, in his opinion, “a real breakthrough, a game changer that will put pressure on Samsung and Apple.” And Australian tech watchdog Smarthouse even pitched in their two cents worth, stating that the Motorola X will deliver software features and capabilities that are currently not available on popular and best-selling phones like the Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S III. After given a demo, that company stated that “the software is really powerful” and delivers Google services and features in a way which has not been done in the past.
This will not be Google’s first foray into having a significant input concerning a smartphone’s design and manufacturer. The internet giant has already drawn considerable praise for its Nexus 4 smartphone, a handset which was manufactured by LG and that delivers the latest version of Google’s Android operating system. The high-end specifications and features of the handset accompany what is a surprisingly low cost for such a device, and the Nexus 4 smartphone has sold well because of that.
But the upcoming Motorola X could actually bite into some of the Nexus 4 sales, as leaked specifications point to the upcoming Motorola X Google phone shipping with the much-anticipated Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie operating system. Seen as a next-generation version of the popular Android mobile operating system, Key Lime Pie will be an attractive addition to the Motorola X, which will continue the recent Motorola tradition of enclosing their handset with a splash-proof Kevlar casing and scratch resistant display.
The handset is also rumored to offer weatherproofing and a high-capacity battery extending performance significantly, along the lines of the long lasting Droid Razr lineup. Smartphone manufacturers and tech companies generally do not confirm or deny rumors, and that is the stance which Google is taking concerning the Motorola X. However, Google’s annual I/O conference is being held in May this year, and could predate a July launch.
