As the least expensive handset offered on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE system in the US, you may expect the Galaxy Nexus 4G on that network to be a low-end feature phone, and perhaps offer very basic performance. However, the Galaxy Nexus 4G for Verizon is the same handset which delivered Android’s version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system to the US for the first time. At that time it was exclusive to the Verizon Wireless network, and has been a flagship phone for that wireless provider ever since it arrived late last year. However, the Galaxy Nexus 4G recently appeared on the rival Sprint network, and that caused Verizon to intelligently lower its Galaxy Nexus 4G retail price to the lowest level of any handset they offer.

The Galaxy Nexus for Verizon is on sale now starting at $49.99.

Out-of-the-box is ICS version 4.0.4 of the Android operating system, supporting applications like Google Wallet and Android Beam. Google Wallet is a wireless retail payment processing app that you can use at brick-and-mortar NFC supporting retail outlets. And Android Beam is another wireless application which allows you to share applications, data and other information with other NFC capable devices. Physically, the handset is still one of the slimmest 4G smartphones available, even though it has been around since December 15 of 2011. At 0.37 inches (9.47 mm) in thickness, the handset is designed similar to most current smartphones, with an average rectangular, slab appearance.

However, the 4.65 inch touchscreen display is anything but average. That size of the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus ranks among the larger smartphone displays, and the handset also delivers one of the highest resolutions you will find on any 4G smartphone. A pixel density of 316 pixels per inch gives the overall screen resolution 720 x 1,280 pixels, and both of those designations lying at the upper end of the 4G smartphone marketplace. That Super AMOLED screen accepts multitouch, capacitive gestures, and uses more than 16 million colors to deliver a visual display.

On the Verizon 4G LTE network, single charge battery time runs nearly 50% better than the average 4G smartphone, at 12.00 hours. Continuing in the hardware package, we find a 1.2 GHz CPU which is allowed to focus primarily on your most important requests and operations, since a separate GPU handles all graphics operations. They are both part of a Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 microchip package, and the Verizon Galaxy Nexus delivers the most built-in data storage out-of-the-box at 32 GB. 1.0 GB of RAM memory is present as well, and the rear facing 5.0 megapixel camcorder provides video capture at 1,080P HD, with a front facing 1.3 megapixel chat cam providing video call support and portrait snapshot capture.

Buy the Galaxy Nexus for Verizon now starting at $49.99.
