The Verizon 4G LTE network in the United States has been home to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4G Android smartphone since it launched in the US on December 15 of last year. When a smartphone is roughly one year old, it usually has run its course and seen better days. That is not the case with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus 4G, a handset which debuted such groundbreaking smartphone features as one of the largest high resolution screens on any smartphone, and delivered Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) 4.0 operating system out-of-the-box for the first time in the United States.
That 4.65 inch, 720 x 1,280 pixel display is still one of the largest and highest resolution screens in the entire smartphone marketplace, and at 0.37 inches (9.47 mm) thin, the handset is also one of the slimmest. Verizon just last month rolled out the brand-new Android 4.1 operating system to their Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4G, and that handset was one of the first to deliver Near Field Communications (NFC) support out-of-the-box. Display resolution is delivered at 316 pixels per inch, by far one of the highest pixel densities offered on any smartphone.
Standard capacitive, multitouch gestures are used for device navigation, and a scratch resistant oleophobic layer overlays the display. The handset uses more than 16 million colors for visual displays, and talk time runs approximately 12.00 hours from a single charge when in Verizon 4G LTE coverage areas. That is approximately 50% better than the typical talk time for a 4G smartphone, and the 1,850 mA battery also provides 6.2 days of standby time.
Samsung chose a Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 microchip package for the handset, with a dual core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor at its core. A PowerVR SGX540 GPU running at 384 MHz handles all graphics processing, and 1.0 GB of RAM system memory is on board. The handset delivers the most out-of-the-box, built-in data storage at 32 GB, and a front facing 1.3 megapixel chat cam provides video call support.
Around the back of the handset the 5.0 megapixel camcorder comes complete with LED flash and autofocus, recording video at 1,080P HD resolution and 30 frames per second. The Verizon Galaxy Nexus 4G also comes with a built-in music player supporting all major audio file formats, and a YouTube video player has been pre-installed. Bluetooth wireless connectivity is present, and the Galaxy Nexus 4G handset can function as a mobile hotspot for multiple wireless devices.
