Verizon announced last Friday that they would begin rolling out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system to their Galaxy Nexus 4G Android smartphone. The roll-out for Jelly Bean 4.1 began in Poland and has already hit the United States on some handsets. A few US Verizon Galaxy Nexus owners have reported already receiving the new operating system, and Verizon announced last week that it would be rolled out in phases. You can check your handset for the much-anticipated OS update in the About Phone section under Settings. The Galaxy Nexus is the first Verizon Wireless handset to receive the new Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system.
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus for Verizon is on sale now starting at 29.99.
The Galaxy Nexus 4G Android smartphone was the first handset to deliver the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) 4.0 operating system to the United States. It’s still remains a flagship smartphone for the Verizon 4G LTE system in the US, even though it launched way back on December 15 of last year. The handset delivers simultaneous voice and data access, a large high-resolution screen, powerful dual core processor and Near Field Communications (NFC) support out-of-the-box. NFC capability allows data share apps like Android Beam and wireless payment processors like Google Wallet to function.
Independent reviewer RootMetrics tested all the major 4G LTE systems in the United States and found the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network the fastest and most reliable in delivering 4G speeds. Galaxy Nexus 4G Android smartphone owners can expect consistent download speeds of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of 2 to 5 Mbps while they are in Verizon 4G LTE mobile broadband coverage zones. The Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus handset is thin at only 0.37 inches (9.47 mm), and slightly heavier than the average 4G LTE smartphone at 5.29 ounces (150 g).
The 4.65 inch display delivers a resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels, rendered at 316 pixels per inch. Standard light and proximity sensors offer auto brightness adjustment and battery conservation, and visuals are displayed in more than 16 million colors. The 1,850 mA battery on board operates approximately 50% more efficiently than the typical 4G smartphone battery, delivering 12.0 hours of talk time from a single charge. An OMAP 4460 Texas Instruments microchip package includes a 1.2 GHz dual core Cortex A9 central processor and PowerVR SGX540GPU GPU.
1.0 GB of RAM system memory is on board, and the handset delivers the most out-of-the-box built-in storage at 32 GB. A front facing 1.3 megapixel chat cam joins a rear facing 5.0 megapixel camcorder in the camera combo, and that rear snapper comes equipped with LED flash, autofocus, white balance, panorama mode and special effects package. Video capture is provided at 1,080P HD resolution, and YouTube and Picasa applications have been pre-installed.
