The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was a landmark handset for both Verizon and Samsung because it delivered the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system to a US handset for the first time. That occurred on December 15 of last year, and since then ICS has effectively delivered on the promise to end fragmentation across multiple Android operating systems, and the ability to automatically sync across multiple form factors. Recently the annual Google I/O Conference was held in San Francisco, California, and the Jelly Bean 4.1 Android operating system update was red carpeted on the new Nexus 7 seven inch Google tablet. Google also announced at that time that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4G would be the first smartphone to deliver Jelly Bean 4.1 to a US handset.

It only seems fitting that the Galaxy Nexus should receive all future Android OS updates first, since it was the first in the US to debut ICS 4.0. Neither Google nor Verizon could be pinned down on a specific date or rollout schedule for Jelly Bean 4.1, only saying the over the air OS transfer would happen soon. Verizon recently lowered the retail price of the Galaxy Nexus 4G to $0.01 with a standard new two-year activation and data plan at select retailers, in the face of new competition from Sprint. The Verizon 4G LTE network had since the arrival of the Galaxy Nexus last year been the exclusive home of the device, but last month Sprint also added the Galaxy Nexus to their Android lineup currently offering it starting at $79 at select retailers.

The 4G LTE Verizon system has been hailed as the fastest and largest in the US, and that belief was held up this year when independent tech reviewer RootMetrics tested all four major US wireless companies. They found Verizon to have the fastest upload and download speeds, and to deliver those speeds more consistently than any other US smartphone wireless service provider. That helps give the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 12.00 hours of talk time from a single battery charge, a number that is approximately 50 percent higher than the 4G smartphone average.

The handset also delivers the maximum amount of built-in, user accessible storage found on any smartphone, at 32 GB. 1.0 GB of RAM system memory is on board, and the Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 microchip package on board includes a dual core 1.2 GHz Cortex A9 processor and graphics dedicated PowerVR SGX540 GPU. The handset’s 4.65 inch Super AMOLED display has a screen resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels, and the handset is capable of 1,080P HD video capture in stereo with the rear mounted 5.0 megapixel camcorder.
