The Verizon version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus was the first handset to deliver the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) 4.0 Android operating system to a US smartphone on December 15 of 2011. That handset was designed to end the much too frequent fragmentation across multiple Android operating systems, and also allow the ICS platform to sync and function across all mobile form factors.

Not as groundbreaking as the move to the ICS 4.0 OS, Jelly Bean will however improve camera operations, offer better home screen efficiency and deliver an easier user interface, also red carpeting Google’s own version of the Apple virtual voice assistant Siri. Called Google Now, the virtual assistant has a pleasant female voice, and is activated through Google Search, also referring to your search history, calendar and other applications to deliver the best possible and most relevant answers to your questions. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4G was originally exclusive to the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network, but is now also offered on the Sprint network.

In the face of competition after such a lengthy period of exclusivity, Verizon recently dropped the retail price of their Galaxy Nexus handset to $0.01 on contract at select retailers. The Galaxy Nexus 4G delivers a large 4.65 inch Super AMOLED display in more than 16 million separate colors and 316 pixels per inch. That endows the capacitive, multitouch screen with an overall display resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels. The Verizon Galaxy Nexus 4G also delivers 12.00 hours from a single charge of the 1,850 mA battery, approximately 50% better than the 4G average.

The handset employs a Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 microchip package, and that suite includes a dual core 1.2 GHz Cortex A9 central processor and graphics dedicated PowerVR SGX540 GPU. Leading the smartphone field in out-of-the-box, built-in, user accessible storage with 32 GB, the Galaxy Nexus also delivers 1.0 GB of RAM system memory. A 5.0 megapixel camcorder around the back of the handset can capture video at 1,080P HD, and is joined in the camera combo by a front facing 1.3 megapixel chat cam which also provides video call support. A built-in music player is present, supporting all major file formats, and a YouTube video player has been pre-installed.  Buy the Samsung Galaxy Nexus starting at one penny.
