The Samsung Galaxy S III was announced on June 4, and arrived on July 12 on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE system in the United States. Globally, the handset has sold more than 30 million units in its first five months of availability, and recently helped South Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung post record-setting profit numbers for the third fiscal quarter of 2012. Available in 16 GB and 32 GB models and in multiple body colors, the handset offers simultaneous voice and data access on the Verizon network.
The Samsung Galaxy S III for Verizon is available at a reduced price tag now starting at 149.99.
S-Voice natural language commands and dictation software support understand your voice better than typical 4G smartphones, and the Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 Android operating system joins the TouchWiz UX user interface out-of-the-box. The handset is slim, and measures 5.39 x 2.80 x 0.34 inches (137 x 71 x 8.6 mm), weighing in at 4.70 ounces (133 g). The display is one of the largest found on any smartphone, and also delivers one of the highest screen resolutions.
That 4.80 inch Super AMOLED display boasts a resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels, and that is delivered at 306 pixels per inch. 16 million different colors are represented in that display, and capacitive, multitouch gestures are used for device navigation. A second generation of Corning Gorilla Glass 2 offers scratch and chip resistance. The 2,100 mA battery on board delivers above average talk time for a 4G smartphone, with 15.0 hours provided from a single battery charge.
Focusing exclusively on handling graphics processing is an Adreno 225 GPU, which is part of a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 microchip package. Also on board is a dual core 1.5 GHz Krait central processor, and twice the average amount of RAM memory for a 4G device at 2.0 GB. The Galaxy S III for Verizon also delivers the most out-of-the-box, built-in data storage at 32 GB, also offering support for external microSD memory cards up to 64 GB in size.
Simultaneous HD video and image recording is presented by the rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder, which comes equipped with a built-in LED flash. That rear snapper also provides a back illuminated sensor (BSI) for low light camera operation, as well as a CMOS image sensor, autofocus and touch to focus, face and smile detection and a high dynamic range (HDR) mode. A 1.9 megapixel chat cam is up front for video calls, a YouTube video player has been pre-installed, as has a built-in music player.
