Verizon Wireless claims the largest 4G LTE system in the United States at more than 440 markets. That speedy LTE network is home to the Samsung Galaxy S III, which recently found itself with a discounted sale price at one of the web’s largest online retail outlets. Amazon is one of the biggest and most popular sellers of smartphones on the entire Internet, and Amazon recently dropped the price of the 16 GB Verizon Galaxy S III to around $19 on contract.
Available in blue, white, black or brown in the 16 GB version, the handset is also offered in a 32 GB model. Both of those Galaxy S III’s for Verizon offer the Jelly Bean 4.1 operating system, which is coupled with the Samsung TouchWiz UX UI Android overlay. The handset is skinny at 0.34 inches (8.6 mm), and is also light in weight, weighing just 4.70 ounces (133 g). NFC wireless support and mobile Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities are present out-of-the-box, as are popular online destinations Facebook, Twitter, Picasa and YouTube.
The display is protected against normal everyday wear and tear, scratching and chipping, by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 2, and Samsung gave the handset one of the largest displays in the entire smartphone marketplace at 4.80 inches. That Super AMOLED screen is capable of displaying more than 16 million different colors, and pixel density runs high at 306 pixels per inch. The True HD screen offers an overall resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels, and Samsung has included light and proximity sensors for auto brightness adjustment and auto display dimming.
Those two sensors also effectively stretch battery life, and on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE system the 2,100 mA battery on the Galaxy S III can deliver more than 8 days of standby power, and as much as 15.0 hours of talk time. Both the 16 GB and 32 GB variants come packed with a full 2.0 GB of RAM memory, also offering microSD, microSDHC & microSDXC support for external memory cards up to 64 GB in size. In the handset’s hardware package, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 microchip suite powers the handset.
The CPU is a dual core model clocked at 1.5 GHz, and an Adreno 225 GPU is on board as well. Camera lovers can use the rear facing 8.0 megapixel camcorder to take snapshots while simultaneously recording high definition video in 1,080P HD resolution, and the GS III comes with a built-in LED flash and back illuminated sensor (BSI) for low light operation. A special effects package, self timer and image stabilization add customization options to that rear snapper, and the Verizon 16 GB Galaxy S III also offers a front facing chat cam with video call capabilities.
