While tons of Android handset owners are battling with rumored releases of the much desired Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) operating system to their smartphones, Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4G owners who purchase their phone on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network have had no such problems. The smartphone that delivered the long-awaited ICS OS recently received a leaked ICS 4.0.4 update, although it is not the officially sanctioned version which Samsung said it is releasing soon. This is still good news for Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4G owners however, as “leaked” builds often times precede the official version.

But even with ICS 4.0.3 installed on their phones, Samsung Galaxy Nexus owners already have a leg up on all those Android smartphone buyers who have a non-Galaxy Nexus device. You may recall the handset arrived right at the end of the holiday shopping season last year on December 15, and has been a best seller for Verizon Wireless and their 4G LTE network since. Sprint and Samsung announced that the Sprint 4G network would begin selling the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4G Android smartphone today for a retail price of $199.

To offset the news that Sprint customers can now own an ICS handset, Verizon Wireless recently lowered the retail price of the first ever ICS phone to $49 at select Verizon authorized online retailers with a standard two-year activation and data agreement. That bargain basement price does not however mean that this is a watered-down version of the popular Galaxy Nexus 4G handset.

The Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4G smartphone still delivers one of the largest displays in the entire 4G smartphone marketplace, a screen resolution and pixel density higher than almost all other 4G handsets, and the most onboard, user accessible storage delivered out-of-the-box. The handset also delivers Near Frequency Communications (NFC) support, as well as Google Wallet ability.

The display mentioned earlier has a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels, delivered at 316 pixels per inch. That 4.65 Super AMOLED screen renders visuals in over 16 million unique colors, and is protected by a layer of scratch resistant treatment. The hardware package on board the Galaxy Nexus is as high-flying as the screen size and resolution, and at the foundation lies a Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 microchip set. That chip set includes a 1.2 GHz cortex A9 CPU, as well as a PowerVR SGX540 chip for handling graphics duties.

32 GB of onboard, user accessible storage are present out-of-the-box, and 1.0 GB of RAM memory rounds out the hardware profile. The 1,850 mA battery on board offers up to 12.0 hours from a single charge, and this battery performance is 50% better than the average 4G smartphone. The camera combo on board delivers a 5.0 megapixel camcorder and 1.3 megapixel chat cam, with that rear mounted camcorder providing video capture at 1080P HD resolution.  Buy the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 4G starting at $49.

  1. Where is the 4.0.4 OS leak for Verizon Wireless users?

  2. I made the mistake of jumping to big red, thinking a Nexus phone would be kept up to date. Everyone in the world has a 4.0.4 while Verizon customers are stuck at 4.0.2. What version does sprint have?

  3. I’m on VZW and I have 4.0.3….you should too by now they rolled it out months ago. We are only 1 version behind…

  4. I’m still on 4.02 here. My phone says it’s “currently up to date.” Did they choose only certain parts of the country to roll the update to? I’m in South Dakota. I got this phone 3 weeks ago.
