Samsung Epic Touch 4G: Back in the day, when our smartphone-crazed brethren in US shores are still waiting for the official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update to finally make it their respective devices, manufacturers have already made it a point to release information as to which of the devices in their lineups will get upgraded to the latest version of the Google mobile operating system. The release of this information always came with a reminder that carrier-specific devices will sometimes experience a delay in getting the official updates because the rollout of ICS is also dependent on the carriers themselves.

This may be the case but as early as February, we heard that the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch could very well be the first smartphone to be released in US shores to get the jump to Ice Cream Sandwich. This bit of information was supported by reports that Sprint, the carrier offering the handset, is already rigorously testing a version of ICS for the handset and is actually in the final stages of testing at the time the news broke out. In addition to that, the RDF page of the ICS update for the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch contained information about the leaked FB09 and FB10 builds in addition to the data about the new ED29 radio that the update is supposed to bring the handset.
The information contained in the RDF page solidified the belief at that time that it is more than likely that the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch will get first dibs on the Ice Cream Sandwich update in US shores. Sad to say, this is not to be the case because a couple of weeks ago, AT&T’s HTC Vivid finally got a taste of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, thereby getting the distinction of being the first Android-powered smartphone in US shores to get the jump to ICS. As for the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, the users of the handset are still playing the waiting game and since then, there has been no solid news as to when the handset will get upgraded to ICS. This frustrating really when you come to think of it, but the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch is still a solid Android handset, ICS or no ICS.
The Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch is Sprint’s version of the Samsung flagship handset and has a Samsung Exynos chipset under the hood to power its operation. A dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and a full gigabyte of RAM give the handset a snappy performance while its storage space is rated at 16G. Its standout feature though is its 4.52-inch SuperAMOLED Plus display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels while its camera department is very impressive with its rear-facing 8MP shooter capable of 1080p clip capture and 2MP front-facer. Also, the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch is still available at select Sprint authorized online retailers for only $49.99 with a new two-year agreement with Sprint. It’s out. This morning it prompted the update. I then plugged it into power and did it. Took about 35-40 minutes to fully install, although I did have to do much. Biggest surprise is that they went out of their way to make it look like the prior version. Very little is ICS about it, but you can certainly alter it a bit and then it becomes clear. Best part: Holds the WIFI networks perfectly. I had so much trouble with that before.

Are you sure? You’re referring to the Epic 4G from Sprint right? I haven’t been able to do anything with it yet.

As of now (4/17/12, 11:00am), it is still not here yet. But I heard everyone in the UK has it now (even unlocked/SIM-free phone owners), sooooo it should come out soon…right? DAMN.
